Discover Lake Trasimeno: villages, islands and breathtaking sunsets near Perugia

Lake Trasimeno: a peaceful corner of nature, history and flavors

Less than an hour from Perugia, Lake Trasimeno is a must-see destination in Umbria. It is not only Italy’s fourth-largest lake: it is a timeless place where nature meets authentic villages, unforgettable sunsets and traditions that taste of olive oil and honest wine.

A landscape that relaxes the soul

Surrounded by gentle hills, olive groves and vineyards, Lake Trasimeno offers panoramas that look like paintings. Its calm waters mirror the sky and change color with the seasons, bringing a new emotion every time you visit. The lake’s three islandsIsola Maggiore, Isola Minore and Isola Polvese — are reachable by ferry and all worth a visit, especially Isola Maggiore with its cobbled lanes, the house of Saint Francis and the hand-made lace tradition.

Villages to explore

Around the lake you will find small villages that feel like a fairytale. Among the best: Castiglione del Lago, with its medieval fortress overlooking the water. Passignano sul Trasimeno, with lakeside walks, colorful boats and excellent restaurants. San Feliciano, the fishermen’s village, where the lake’s authentic atmosphere still lives. Tuoro sul Trasimeno, site of the historic battle between Romans and Carthaginians, with themed routes and stunning views.

Experiences to enjoy

A bike or e-bike ride along the lakeside cycle route: 70 km of nature, reeds and calming silence. A boat or kayak ride at sunset, when the island silhouettes light up against a fiery sky. A tasting of local products, such as tegamaccio (the lake’s fish stew), DOP extra-virgin olive oil and wines from the Umbrian hills.

Events and traditions

In spring and summer, Lake Trasimeno comes alive with cultural and food events. Not to miss: Palio delle Barche in Passignano (late July), reenacting a legendary escape on the lake. Festa del Giacchio in San Feliciano, celebrating traditional lake cuisine. Music and sunsets with Trasimeno Blues and the Festival of Correspondences.

How to get there from Perugia

The lake is easy to reach from Perugia by car (30-40 minutes), by train (stops at Castiglione del Lago, Passignano, Magione), or even by bike for the sporty, following the ancient Trasimeno route. If you’re already in the center, you can start your day with a walk on the Roman aqueduct and then head to the lake.
